Chapter 18

Greer

Greer stumbled away from Desiree. Her head swam with thoughts that terrified her, her eyes blurry from smoke. The air became thick with it, so thick it was coating the roof of her mouth, the back of her throat. She needed fresh air, a moment away from the mayhem, people in chaos all around her, the deafening noise of the men yelling.

The gates to the convent stood wide open. Greer took advantage of the mad rush, dashing around the line of men still bringing in sloshing buckets of water.

The spectacle of the burning convent had attracted a large crowd. With everyone’s attention on the building, it was easy for her to slip out of the gates, into the masses. Her thoughts weren’t set on escape. She just needed to breathe, to stand without bodies pressing in on her.

She tripped over uneven cobblestone, unsure of what direction she should go. The square where she met Dorian Finch seemed the best option—wide open with benches for sitting and admiring the cathedral or for simply bird watching.

Greer hadn’t paid attention to the tall, wrought-iron posts with the black and white street signs, so she looked toward the sky, the spires of the cathedral her guide. The air was thick with smoke, the blue, sunny sky becoming obscured by haze, dark and heavy. There seemed no escaping it, and there wouldn’t be, not in a town this size.

Greer tripped again, over the root of an oak tree attempting to rise from the ground. She would have fallen hard on her face had a hand not shot out from a wooden door, yanking her upright, then inside the building.

The hand was huge and strong, lifting and pulling her with almost no effort.

Before Greer knew what was happening, the doors to what she now registered as a stable closed behind her.

The air was pungent with horse manure, warm from the bodies of the horses whinnying in their stalls, and it was dark.

She spun around, sure she was about to face down some leering man, maybe a dirty member of the crowd who yelled at them on their way to the square.

What she saw knocked the wind out of her. Cold fear washed over her despite the closeness of the room.

“What are you doing here?” she sputtered.

Theron leaned against the closed door of the stable, that cold, not-so-amused look on his face. His eyes were hooded as they looked over at her, his head dipped, cocked to the side.

“This is fortuitous. For me, that is.” His voice was a low rumble. He stared at her the way she imagined a lion would stare at a mouse.

Greer tore her gaze from his face to take in her surroundings. She couldn’t see anything that might be the other creatures. “Are the others here, too?” she whispered.

“No one is here but me and you, little rabbit. Tell me.” His voice dropped to a drawl as he stalked forward. “Did you seek me out?”

Greer took one step back, then another.
